Camp Independence, run by St. Louis Children's Hospital with help from Carol and Paul Hatfield, is the only sports camp in the nation created specifically for children with cerebral palsy. The theme is "We all can play."
Kids of all abilities are encouraged to play baseball, hockey, basketball and martial arts, among other sports. The camp allows children who use wheelchairs or walkers to move to learn that they, too, can participate in all the same activities that their schoolmates do. They build their physical skills while also learning to be more self confident. During one session, the kids participated in 'wheelchair art,' where they used their wheelchairs, walkers or their feet to paint tracks or prints across a giant canvas.
